How to Improve Your Golf Swing
Overview
Golf can be a very aggravating sport because it looks so easy when it is played correctly. Most amateurs have difficulty with the game because of a flaw in their swing. Fortunately, there are numerous steps you can take to fix these mistakes and improve your golf swing. Some of these remedies are simple things that can be done in an instant while others will take some practice in order to get used to them. Use these tips to improve your golf swing.
Step 1
Start off by hitting the gym. Lifting weights an average of two to three times a week can drastically improve the distance of your drives as well as your performance during the later holes and rounds. Just ask Tiger Woods! Stronger biceps, triceps and forearms will help you to swing the club with more velocity. Ab workouts will help with this as well. You should also spend at least one day per week working out your back and legs. This can increase your endurance while out on the course. Work with a trainer at a gym to target the areas where you need the most training.
Step 2
Position your feet, body and club head correctly. Pick a target to aim for, such as the pin or an imaginary spot on the fairway. Mentally create a line from your ball to that particular spot. Then, stand at the ball so that your feet and body are perpendicular to that imaginary line. This way, the club head should be pointed directly at the target you're aiming for once you place the head behind the ball.
Step 3
Practice your golf swing with drills. There are numerous drills you can perform both indoors and outdoors that will help you with the fundamentals of your swing. This is one you can do while watching television in your living room. Grip a golf club (preferably a driver but it truthfully doesn't matter) at both the top and bottom of the club (just above the club head). Lift the club over and behind your head so that it rests on your shoulders. Go into your normal golf stance and rotate your upper body as if you were swinging the golf club. This will help to teach you proper posture and movements for your golf swing.
Step 4
Work on transferring your weight correctly during your golf swing. This is especially important when you are attempting to drive the golf ball. Your weight should follow your swing, going all the way to the outside of your back foot during your backswing. Once you begin advancing the club towards the ball, your weight should fully transfer to your other foot right as you make contact with the golf ball. This is another thing that you can practice in your home as you can do so without using a golf club if you wish.
Step 5
Perform drills to increase your club head speed. Stand on either side of the bucket without touching the bucket with your legs or feet. Visualize a golf ball on the ground and practice driving the imaginary ball while standing over the bucket. When you do this drill, make sure that your inside leg never makes contact with the bucket. This makes you focus on your hips and torso during the swing, which can lead to you increasing the speed of your swing. A swing with more velocity, of course, can lead to longer drives.
Step 6
Finish your swing correctly. The first mistake many amateurs make is looking up before the swing is finished. You must keep your head down and your eyes on the ball until you have finishing swinging through the golf ball. Otherwise, you increase the odds that you will hook or slice the ball. It's also important to completely follow through. Doing so will add distance to your drive and ensure that the ball goes where you want it to go.
