About Types of Depression
Overview
Depression is a mental disorder that affects the mood, behavior and personality of the sufferer. It comes in many forms, and there are several different diagnoses for the condition. These types of depression are determined in part by the symptoms, intensity of symptoms and the specific cause of the symptoms.
Types
The types of depression can be placed into several different categories. Major depression is the most serious, with the most severe and numerous of symptoms. Dysthymic disorder is low to moderate depression that persists for more than 2 years. Although not as severe as major depression, dysthmic disorders often last longer and are more resistant to treatments. Adjustment disorder with depression occurs after a major life change or crisis. Manic depression includes mood swings and a variety of symptoms not present in other types of depression. Other less common types of depression include post partum, anxiety, atypical, chronic, psychotic, melancholic, catatonic and unspecified.
Features
Symptoms of depression often vary from one type to another. However, there are certain features that most types of depression exhibit. Fatigue, loss of energy, significant weight loss or gain, increase or decrease in sleeping, excessive guilt and feelings of worthlessness are some of these symptoms. More dangerous signals of depression include thoughts of suicide, attempted suicide and involvement in risky behavior such as careless sexual encounters or overspending.
Effects
Depression negatively affects most aspects of daily life. In the work environment, depressed individuals tend to be less productive and prone to mistakes. At home, a lack of interest and inability to participate in family activities can strain relationships. The more severe the type of depression, the greater the effects on home, work and social life. In addition, there are also physical effects that accompany most types of depression. Chronic fatigue and physical pains with no probable source are notorious signs of major depression.
Prevention/Solution
There are many treatments for the various types of depression. Medication treatments vary depending on the type and severity of the disorder. They are often the first option prescribed by health professionals. Anti-depressant drugs are used to treat major depression and many other forms of the sickness. MAO inhibitors are sometimes used to treat atypical depression. Anti-anxiety medications are used for anxiety related depression. However, some people experience adverse side effects to depression medication and seek other routes for treatment. Psychotherapy, self-help, herbal and natural therapies have all been used with success to treat most types of depression.
Warning
Depression is a serious mental disorder and should not be ignored. If you or someone you known exhibits symptoms of any type of depression, consult a certified mental health professional. Even mild types of depression such as dysthmic disorder can develop into major depression over time. Seek treatment sooner than later for your benefit and the benefit of those close to you.
